Hi, my name is Al. My PhD was all about nitty-gritty details, becoming an expert in my field and preparing talks for conferences. But there was little emphasis on developing the soft skills to make better communication: to the general public, to collaborators or my soccer teammates. That made things less efficient.
In the same way, how to get the most out of a meeting or manage the interactions inside the lab to make it more efficient for everyone.
I tried to pay more attention during my postdoc and was lucky enough to have a great mentor in communication, a lab with other scientists interested in science communication and an institution with the Alan Alda center for communicating science with free courses for postdocs.
I’m by no means an expert, but I’d like to share some of the things I have learnt in this blog. Hope you enjoy and add comments with suggestions!
